Wondering what Steampunk is?

Steampunk is a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.[1][2][3] Although its literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre,[4] steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century British Victorian era or the American "Wild West", in a future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. However, steampunk and neo-Victorian are different in that the neo-Victorian movement does not extrapolate on technology while technology is a key aspect of steampunk.[5]
Steampunk most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retrofuturistic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art.[citation needed] Such technologies may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne,[6] or of the modern authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld, Stephen Hunt, and China MiƩville.[original research?] Other examples of steampunk contain alternative-history-style presentations of such technology as steam cannons, lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine.[citation needed]
Steampunk may also incorporate additional elements from the genres of fantasy, horror, historical fiction, alternate history, or other branches of speculative fiction, making it often a hybrid genre.[citation needed] The first known appearance of the term steampunk was in 1987, though it now retroactively refers to many works of fiction created as far back as the 1950s or earlier.[citation needed]
Steampunk also refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid-20th century.[7] Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.[8]

A little bit of love

Anthony has been busy making tokens of his love.
I adore gramophones...and look what he made me,
his very appreciative wife,
but a fantastic gramophone lamp,
La Boutique Vapeur style.
There are no words...

A chat with Stephen Fitz-Gerald

I have had the distinct pleasure of chatting with one of my favorite artists...Stephen Fitz-Gerald. I discovered his work while networking on Facebook, and fell in love with his incredibly diverse expression. Stephen creates music, enjoys photography & creates lovely and moving metal sculpture

Stephen enjoys many different mediums, as he believes that becoming fluent in as many as possible gives a greater scope and depth to ones artistic expression. He believes an idea isn't always reducible to sculpture, sometimes being more aptly expressed in a song, painting, or in a photograph.
Click here to visit Stephen Fitz-Gerald's website and see his fantastic work

He proclaims that he had the very best of teachers...his parents. The art of expression being made available to him by his parents allowed Stephen to develop a deep appreciation for the arts.

If you sample some of Stephen music, you may be surprised to find out that he creates everything on a little 4 track recorder, while playing his own instruments. He enjoys playing his acoustic guitar & synthesizer (as he put it...sympathizer..lol) and creates his music in the late night hours, in the peace of his home. He has no desire to play in public, as he uses his music to listen to in the studio while working on metal sculpture, or for reverie before and after sleep, where most of his sculptural ideas get formed.

So, cheers to you Stephen...your art is a joy to appreciate. Thank you and keep creating!

If you are lucky enough to live in the Napa, CA area, be sure to visit Stephen's current one man show at Liken Gallery which will be available through August 2013.

ConCarolinas 2014

Click here to see the official website for George R.R. Martin

About ConCarolinas

When: May 30-June 1, 2014

Where: Charlotte Hilton University Place - Charlotte, NC

ConCarolinas is a general multi-genre multi-media convention. They call themselves a sci-fi convention but in truth they cover all speculative fiction - science fiction, fantasy and horror.

It hosts a variety of fandom related events and guests, including gaming, discussion panels, costume events, music events like Klingon Karaoke, charity auction, SCA events, fan groups like the 501st Legion, Starfleet, and Klingon Assault Group, and something different every year.

In 2003 they held their first full-blown 3-day Science Fiction con - a longer Con than the 2-day 2002 "Prequel" the previous year. It was larger than the mini-con, using more space, having more panels, writing seminars, a bigger dealer room and more guests, including Guest of Honor David Weber. Since then, ConCarolinas has grown to be one of the more respected and talked about cons in the region.

ConCarolinas was a fan-based group that was originally sponsored by South Eastern Convention Fandom, Inc (SECFi), and as of 2008, incorporated into their own ConCarolinas, Inc., a nonprofit organization. They are a regional committee, pulling the majority of its members of our ConCom from North and South Carolina.

The ConCom has years of convention and fandom experience, with its members having been involved in running Stellarcon, MACE, IC99, ROC-of-AGES, Bab-Trek, FanFaire, Chattacon, Philcon, the UNCC Science Fiction & Fantasy Guild and others.

The guest of honor for the 2014 ConCarolinas is author George R.R. Martin. See the link at the top of the page to read more about him.
